This pathfinder is a collection of resources to help with general library research, and completing assignments, for Africana courses. Africana is defined as the study of the cultures, societies, and arts of people of African descent whether they are from the continent or the diaspora. If you need more information than this pathfinder gives please come to the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of Scott library where we'll do our best to answer your questions.

Getting Started

To find books, documents, maps, music and videos which cover Africana topics you will need to search the library's catalogue which we call Yorkline. Finding Articles

To find articles in newspapers, magazines and academic journals the following indexes and databases should be useful. As a starting point try using the same keywords as suggested above. For a lesson on how to search electronic databases see the Finding Articles Tutorial. 

Electronic Periodical Indexes / Databases

  • African Studies
    African Studies is an exclusive combination of databases and provides unique access to over 300 periodicals and edited works on Africa in the social sciences and humanities. 
  • Alternative Press Index 
    This source is an index to alternative and radical publications. Numerous subjects headings deal with Africana topics including both the continent and the diaspora, as well as issues like racism and discrimination.
     
  • Expanded Academic
    Use this database to find articles in the humanities, social sciences, arts, science and technology. This database indexes and abstracts approximately 1580 scholarly and general interest periodicals and provides full text of over 520 periodicals. 
  • International Index to Black Periodicals
    This database includes citations from over 150 scholarly and popular periodicals and has a multidisciplinary Black studies focus. Full-text coverage is available for 25 core Black Studies periodicals (1998 forward). 
  • PAIS
    This database indexes 1600 periodicals and 8000 books annually on topics of international economics, social issues and politics. One of it's major strengths is global issues and as such countries in the Two-Thirds world, including Africa and the Caribbean, are well covered.

  • Africa South of the Sahara - Index to Periodical Literature 1900-1970

    This index provides access to primary source articles about Africa. It is a challenge to use and will be of most use to the student conducting historical research.
  • Africana book reviews, 1885-1945 
     Z 3501 E35 Scott Reference
    This guide provides access to reviews of books which were being written about Africa from 1885-1945. Useful for uncovering a historical perspective about Africa and colonialism. 
  • Caribbean  Abstracts 
    2nd floor Scott Index Shelves
    This source contains abstracts of books and articles in the humanities and social sciences which are held at the Royal Institute of Linguistics and Anthropology (Netherlands). Their strong Caribbean Studies collection is featured in this tool. 
  • Index to Black Periodicals 
    2nd floor Scott Index Shelves
    This is an index to African-American periodicals of general and scholarly interest. Topic coverage is interdisciplinary and includes all aspects of the African experience, especially the diasporic viewpoint.
  • The Kaiser Index to Black resources 1948-1986 -
    Z 1361 N39 K34 Scott Reference
    This index includes 174, 000 records documenting the experiences of African-Americans. It was compiled by librarians at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture over the corse of almost 40 years.
  • Multicultural Education Abstracts 
    2nd floor Scott Index Shelves
    This abstract scans major international journals and books to find material relevant to multicultural education. The subject index provides good coverage of Africana issues under such headings as African-American, African-Canadians, Black parents and Caribbean families. 
  • Sage Race Relations Abstracts
    2nd floor Scott Index Shelves
    Each quarterly issue of this source offers clearly-written summaries of the best and most recent journal articles, books and conference papers dealing with race relations. Sage Race Relations Abstracts assesses more than 300 publications  and includes topics such as discrimination, culture, community relations and politics.

Websites

There is lots of interesting and worthwhile information available on the internet for Africana studies. However, you need to be careful about what you decide to use because there are also lots of dated, low-quality, incorrect and biased websites out there. To find out more about how to critically evaluate websites check out our section on Evaluating the Internet. Below are a few metasites which should provide a good jumping off point for internet research.

  Search Engines and Websites

  • African Canadian Online
    This site is hosted by York University's Centre for the Study of Black Cultures in Canada. It aims to provide links and information relating to African Canadian artists and writers. 
  • Caribe Search
    This site is primarily an Internet Subject guide which organizes it's information about the West Indies into useful topic directories. It's goal is to foster the development of the Caribbean online community. 
  • Columbia University's African Studies websites
    This site is a collection of online resources pertaining to study of the African continent. Links are organized by region and country and include journals, library catalogs, news archives, reports and art exhibitions. 
  • H-Net Gateway to African Studies
    H-Net Africa is an international network of teachers and students who are interested in Africana. It is a collection of list serves (in this case such topics as African/African-American culture, politics, literature, history) where scholars discuss issues of interest.

  • International Cultural Centre Caribbean Links
    This metasite provides access to search engines, newspapers and general websites on the Caribbean. It is organized geographically allowing one to search for information on the particular West Indian island of interest.
  • InfoSurf's Black Studies links
    This site is a major gateway to online information about Africa and the diaspora. Links are organized by format (e.g.. fulltext essays and journals) and by topic (e.g.. Music, Religion, Politics). 
  • Africa Web Links - Penn State
    This site is valuable for the numerous subject headings under which you can search for African electronic resources. These include such topics as Human rights, architecture and the environment.
  • Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture
    The Schomburg Center is committed to documenting the histories and cultures of peoples of African descent. Their selected Internet resources are easily searched by geographic region and topic area and provide access to a wide range of sites. 
  • Soul Search
    Soul Search bills itself as the search engine for people of colour. One can use the search box to conduct a keyword search or choose one of the topics (including Caribbean, Religion, Genealogy and Health) in the subject tree. 
  • WoYaa! African Web Portal
    WoYaa's subtitle reflects it's goal : promoting Africa in the Digital Age. This site is both a search engine and a subject guide and includes links to magazines, news, forums and lists.
